The Reasons Why Your Cat Isn't Using The Cat Litter Box
Many cat owners are puzzled as to why their cats do not always want to use their litter box. Solving the problem is easy when you follow the tips below.
Check to make sure the litter box is located in a quiet place in your home for your cat to have privacy. Many people put them in their basements and leave the door open a little as this not only creates a private environment but also keeps odors to a minimum in the rest of the house. Closets can be a good place for a litter box when living in a condo or apartment be sure to keep the litter box clean and the closet door open for your cat to be able to use it.
You may want to place the litter box under a table out of sight if the floor is tile you should avoid placing it on carpet since it is very hard to eliminate urine smell in carpet. Have there been any changes to the litter box. Did you change the location of the litter box recently? Does the box need cleaning?
When buying new litter avoid using litter that has heavy scents cats prefer using unscented litter. Has the depth of the litter in the box changed? Some cats like their litter deep, others shallow. Make sure you replace the small litter box with a larger litter box as your cat grows. The box is too hard to enter and exit. This can be an issue for older cats. Always keep your cat’s water and food dish in a separate place from the litter box. You may have to close the door to a room when your cat decides to soil where you do not want him to be when left alone or if that is not possible you will have to put a piece of furniture over the spot to prevent future accidents. Putting their food bowl over the target area may do the trick because cats do not like to combine their eating area with their bathroom area.
Schedule your cat to see a Vet on a yearly basis. If you own multiple cats you will have to buy a separate litter box for each cat. Have you recently moved? A cat might smell an area where the previous owner's cat urinated. Do not disturb your cat when it is going to the bathroom.
When you bring a new cat into your house be patient as it may take 3 to 8 weeks for it to adjust to the new home. When there is a change in your family your cat will need time to adjust to either the addition of a new baby or the loss of a family member due to death of a spouse. A change in your schedule can throw off your cat's schedule as well and cause problems. Try and phase in major lifestyle changes gradually.
Do not punish your cat with physical violence such as kicking or hitting them and rubbing their nose in their own urine is useless punishment because the smell does not bother them. Cats cannot make the cause and effect connection like we can so punishment after the fact is useless and will only make matters urinated worse. Naturally cats are exceptionally clean and are aware of where they are going. It is important to remember this and try and help your cat overcome any stress or anxiety they might be having in a caring and loving manner.
