Jewelry Boxes Women Love to Exhibit: Wood Inlay with Zebrawood
Women are fascinated by handcarved wooden jewelry boxes and these boxes are especially popular with those who collect a lot of jewelry. A type of the wooden jewelry boxes women adore is the one that is embellished with intricate art work like marquetry. Many kinds of exotic and rare woods are used in marquetry.
Zebrawood is used extensively in marquetry because of its extremely attractive color and diverse patterns. Marquetry is an ancient art of decorating the lid and exterior of a jewelry box which add to its charm. Veneers and burls of different kinds of rare and exotic wood are used to produce breathtaking designs and images.
Herds of zebra zipping by in the wilderness, or drinking water at streams, or grazing amiably, are images constantly brought to us by National Geographic. On the other hand, Zebrawood, is not something that can be found easily. This exotic wood is found only in parts of Central Africa: Cameroon, the Congo, and Gabon. Its striking resemblance to the zebra, with the very dark thin stripes on a light background, is how it got its name.
Zebrawood is of the Microberlina brazzavillensis species and is also called as Amouk, Allenele, African Zebrawood, and Zingana. This tree has a diameter of 48 inches to 60 inches and is predominantly found on the banks of rivers.
Its heartwood reveals an extremely pale golden hue with thin very dark black and dark brown stripes. It has a very coarse texture and the pale color extends to the sapwood too. The wood is susceptible to insects as it is highly resistant to treatment with preservatives.
It is very difficult to cut or carve this wood as its grains are interlocked tightly and very closely defined. But it is an extremely beautiful and attractive wood with its exuberant patterns and colors especially when its quartersawn. When the wood is cut, it gives out a weird smell and it also does not dry out easily.
Extra care has to be taken when handling the Zebrawood veneer as it is quite fragile. But it can be worked fairly well with the use of hand and power tools. Using a belt sander will give a very smooth machine finish.
